The Wasteland Trail is an experimental caravan-travel prototype built on the Fallout 2 engine, drawing conceptual inspiration from Oregon Trail without using its assets. The player must deliver medicine to Dusthaven across five stops and six encounters, interacting with characters such as Mara, Vale, Nell, June, Rook and Dr. Finch. The README states clearly that this is an early prototype: combat and the original campaign remain disabled, so it should not be treated as a complete or fully playable game.
Technically, the prototype runs natively on Fallout 2 using the player’s local disc assets and adds custom mouse-and-keyboard panels for supplies, travel, route, save and guide functions. Trading uses caps, with Nell and Rook holding separate stocks and prices; each Buy or Sell action trades exactly one unit, and caps, supplies and stock update immediately. The crew system centres on fatigue and morale: travel adds fatigue and removes morale, and high fatigue or low morale increases water or food costs. Rest is limited to once per stop and cannot be repeated for extra gains.
Saving uses a single trail-journey.sav checkpoint. Saving overwrites it, while Continue restores supplies, caps, merchant stocks, route, ending, crew condition, advice, used rests and remembered choices. The README notes that older prototype 03 and 04 saves can load with default values for missing fields, and that loading does not rewrite the file until an explicit Save is made. Overall, the project demonstrates a caravan-travel, trading and survival prototype with a deliberately limited and experimental scope.
